Pleasure: What arises for you when you read this word?
A memory of your lover stroking your cheek, savoring a delicious meal, swimming with dolphins ten years ago? Perhaps the word brings up some sadness or recognition that pleasure is missing in your life, and has been for a long time.
Consider this: What if pleasure is available to you right now? What if it’s as simple and easy as closing your eyes and sensing what is happening right here, right now in your body?
Let me give you an example: In this moment, I’m aware of the firm seat of the chair beneath my butt, and the bounce of the iPad on my knees as I stroke the keyboard with my fingertips. I inhale the chocolatey fragrance of my espresso and feel the tingle of a cool breeze caressing my face as a door opens and closes.
As I focus on these sensations, my body wakes up. My toes dance in my shoes, and a warmth spreads from the bottoms of my feet up through my legs and into my genitals. And with that, my pussy softens, moistens, and relaxes into the chair. A smile sparkles across my face, and my whole being lights up with the electricity of turn on.

This kind of embodied pleasure wasn’t always available to me. Like many of my clients, and perhaps like you, my innate capacity to experience pleasure was stifled early on. In my family, pleasure, especially sexual pleasure, was considered taboo – and NEVER discussed. Furthermore, any kind of authentic intimate connection was absent. I cannot remember anyone in my family ever taking the time to simply BE with me, ask me curious questions, or listen attentively while looking me in the eyes.
As I entered adolescence, all I was told about sex is that it’s this unpleasant act you perform to please your spouse. Definitely not something to explore on your own, let alone enjoy. So when I started to follow my body’s promptings and explore the forbidden world of sexual sensation, I did it furtively and with shame. Though I was full of longing and desire, I was unable to open my body – and all the treasures it held – with another.
For the first 50 years of my life I thought I was sexually broken. And then, as I reveal in my best-selling book Pleasure Past Fifty, during my second Saturn Return, I went on a remarkable journey of sexual self-discovery. I released the shame, trauma and conflicting relationship with my body and reawakened its inherent capacity to embrace, transmit and delight in authentic pleasure. I channeled this transformation into a pathway to guide others.
This is what I now know: Our bodies are designed for pleasure. Pure and simple.
So I’m curious about you: What’s your relationship like with pleasure? If you’re in a relationship, is your sex life alive, or just a memory? If you’re single, do you despair you’ll never feel passion again?
Pleasure is not a fairy tale. It’s available for you now, especially as you get older. It’s never too late to reclaim, embody, and authentically express this gift that is your birthright. Are you ready and willing to take the practical steps to open that door?
